Sorani Kurdish, also known as Central Kurdish, is a Northwestern Iranian language and the second most widely spoken Kurdish language (after Kurmanji), with at least 9 million speakers (Thackston, 2001) in Iran and Iraq. In Iraq, Sorani Kurdish has official status alongside Arabic, and is the dominant language of government, education, and media The main varieties are «Kurmanji» (Northern Kurdish), chiefly spoken in Kurdistan, in the border area between Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq; and «Jurdi» often called «Sorani», chiefly spoken in Iran and Iraq. Kurdish is generally written in a variation of the Arabic script, though the Roman script is also common. Note: The You (singular) Intransitive form can also appear as simply ی in spoken Sorani; the ت in یت can be dropped in certain situations.
